In an effort to provide dual credit to Kentucky high school students and partner on the improvement of Kentucky’s high schools to expand college access, the University of Kentucky has created the UK Next Generation Scholars program. Students that attend Network high schools will have access to UK Dual Credit courses through the UK Next Generation Scholarship. The Scholarship affords students in the dual credit courses access to University of Kentucky courses at a discounted rate in concert with Kentucky policies on dual credit. UK is a participant in the Kentucky Dual Credit Scholarship Program. This Program is administered as part of the dual credit initiatives from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA).
The courses are available for high school juniors and seniors at the Network sites to a maximum of 10 courses. All courses offered as dual credit are part of the UK Core and thus are part of the common experience of all UK students as well as being highly transferable to other Kentucky institutions. The courses are taught largely in combination with UK faculty leading the course implementation and high school teachers supporting the course. Further, students in the UK courses are provided additional advising and college readiness supports by UK personnel to assist in the transitions to College.
The Next Gen Scholars Program will only be available in network high schools. High schools wishing to partner with UK to offer this program will have to submit an application that asks leaders to respond on the depth of implementation of Next Generation learning practices within their school. Additional information on network membership is available in the Network Request for Partners.
For those eligible high school students not within Network High Schools who wish to take advantage of the University of Kentucky’s rich curricular offerings in an on-campus experience, UK allows them to be admitted while finishing up their high school diplomas. If the course pre-requisites are met, the student can enroll in a UK course on campus and pay full tuition/fees. They may not use their Kentucky Dual Credit Scholarship for this kind of enrollment. This option for high school students is currently available and details about this opportunity for exceptional high schoolers can be found on the UK Undergraduate Admissions website.
