Frequently Asked Questions

Why has UK established a waitlist for some first-year students?

The interest among incoming first-year students to be part of the Big Blue Nation this fall has been unprecedented.

To that end, on May 4, 2022, the University transitioned its admittance for first-year students for the Fall 2022 semester based on admitted college and residency.

Is the waitlist in a ranked or numbered order?

No, the waitlist is not ranked. The Office of Undergraduate Admission is reviewing the list regularly based on availability for admitted college and residency.

Should I confirm at another institution?

We are unable to predict waitlist decisions. Students on the waitlist should consider other options for enrollment at other institutions in the fall. If a student is moved off the waitlist, we will notify them as soon as possible so they may make an informed decision.

How likely is it that I will be moved off the waitlist?

We are unable to predict waitlist decisions but will communicate with students as soon as possible if they are moved off the waitlist and provided an opportunity to confirm (register for Big Blue Nation Orientation).

When is the latest I would hear back on whether I will be moved off the waitlist?

All students on the waitlist will be notified no later than July 20 if they will be removed from the waitlist.

Is Housing still available on campus?

On-campus housing is on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who have already completed their housing application should watch for details about room selection.

I am a Kentucky resident who has not confirmed (has not registered for orientation). May I change my major to one still accepting confirmations?

Kentucky residents who have not registered for BBN Orientation may request a major change into one of the following colleges:

  • Agriculture, Food and Environment
  • Arts and Sciences
  • Gatton College of Business and Economics
  • Communication and Information
  • Design
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Fine Arts
  • Martin School of Public Policy and Administration
  • Public Health
  • Social Work

Currently, only the colleges above are accepting new registrations for BBN Orientation.

Students may request a major change using these instructions. Students entering the fall 2022 semester may not request major changes into the Colleges of Health Sciences or Nursing.

I am an out-of-state student who has not confirmed (has not registered for orientation). May I change my major to one still accepting confirmations?

Non-residents who have not registered for BBN Orientation may request a major change for select programs in the College of Engineering or the College of Arts and Sciences if they meet any selective admission requirements:

Non-residents requesting a major change into the College of Engineering must:

  • Have initially selected a major in the College of Engineering as their first or second choice on their admission application AND
  • Meet the selective admission requirements for the College of Engineering for first-year students

Students who did not select College of Engineering as their first or second choice on their admission application will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Non-residents requesting a major change into the College of Arts and Sciences:

  • Must request a major other than Political Science or Psychology
  • Must meet any selective admission requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences for first-year students

Out-of-state students wishing to change their major who meet the requirements above may request a major change using these instructions

Non-resident students who have not registered for BBN Orientation may not request a major change into any other college or program at this time.
