Holistic Review

When the University of Kentucky Office of Admissions receives a completed application, our staff begins a review of prior academic history and test scores (if submitted). If a student does not meet the certain admission requirements to the university as outlined by UK and the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, their application will be reviewed through a comprehensive holistic review process.

In the holistic review process, we evaluate applicants as whole individuals, not just by isolated factors such as GPA or test scores. This means that students are considered not only by their academic performance but also personal achievements, extracurricular involvement and leadership.

Staff members across different offices at the university may be involved in the holistic review of the application. Once those reviews take place, the college to which the student applied will initially evaluate the application. However, based on an applicant’s academic preparation and a program’s requirements, the student may be considered for admission to a different college within the University of Kentucky. The college best positioned to support the applicant’s success will make the final determination for admission.

Due to the complex nature of the reviews taking place, specific timelines for a decision will vary from student to student. While decisions resulting from holistic review may be made on a rolling basis, freshman applicants who meet our deadlines will be notified of their admission status no later than the end of March for the following Fall semester.  Please reach out to the Office of Undergraduate Admission if you have any questions.

The FAQs below will help you better understand what holistic review entails, what we look for in applicants, and how you can submit the strongest possible application.

What is holistic review?

Holistic review is an admissions approach that evaluates applicants as whole individuals, considering both academic and personal achievements. It ensures that factors beyond test scores and grades are taken into account, such as extracurricular involvement, leadership roles, and community service.

What factors are considered in the holistic review process?

The holistic review process assesses:

  • High school GPA and the rigor of courses
  • Test scores (if submitted)
  • Extracurricular activities, leadership, and community involvement
  • Honors and awards
  • Personal essays and responses
  • Letters of recommendation (if submitted)

Is submitting test scores required?

No, the University of Kentucky offers a test-optional policy for most applicants. Students who feel that their test scores accurately reflect their academic potential are welcome to submit them, but those who choose not to submit scores will not be penalized. All other application components will receive greater emphasis in the holistic review.

Does participating in extracurricular activities improve my chances?

While participation in extracurriculars isn’t required, meaningful involvement—whether through school clubs, community service, employment, or family responsibilities—can strengthen your application. The admissions team values students who demonstrate leadership, initiative and commitment.

How are personal essays evaluated?

Your personal essay is a critical part of the holistic review. We encourage authenticity and careful reflection in your writing. Essays are evaluated for content, insight, and the ability to communicate effectively.

Are letters of recommendation required?

No, letters of recommendation are not required, but they can provide additional insights into your  academic abilities and leadership potential. Letters of recommendation may be submitted by teachers, counselors, or mentors by documents@uky.edu.

How does the University handle applications without standardized test scores?

For test-optional applicants, greater weight will be placed on academic performance and course rigor. We aim to identify students who are prepared to succeed at the University of Kentucky.

Does applying for certain majors affect the review process?

Some competitive programs may have additional criteria, such as auditions, portfolios, or minimum GPA requirements. If your desired program has specific requirements, please check with the relevant department to ensure you meet all deadlines and requirements.

When will I receive an admissions decision?

Admissions decisions are typically released on a rolling basis starting in the fall. If additional information is needed to complete your holistic review, we will contact you. We encourage you to check your email regularly for updates.

Deferred Students

Understanding Your Deferred Admission Status

We’re excited about your interest in joining the University of Kentucky and want to support you through the next steps in the application process. A deferred admission decision means that we need more information before making a final decision on your application. Below, we’ve outlined what you can do to strengthen your application and increase your chances of admission.

We appreciate your patience and commitment to becoming a part of the Wildcat family.  We look forward to seeing any updates you submit!

Why Was My Application Deferred?

Our admissions process is selective, and decisions are based on several factors, including:

  • High school GPA
  • Completion of a pre-college curriculum
  • Standardized test scores (optional)

If you didn’t submit ACT/SAT scores initially, you still have the option to send them. You may also submit an updated transcript showing seventh-semester grades.

What Are My Next Steps?

  1. Submit Test Scores (Optional but Helpful)
    • If you have new or improved test scores, submit them through ACT or College Board.
    • You can also take the February ACT or March SAT if you haven't yet tested.
  2. Send Your Updated Transcript
    • Request that your high school send us an updated transcript with seventh-semester grades and earned credits. This updated transcript will give us a clearer picture of your academic progress.
  3. Verify Test Score Delivery
    • Ensure that any previously submitted test scores were successfully received by our office. You can verify this directly with ACT or College Board.

How Will My Application Be Reviewed?

Once we receive your additional materials, our team will carefully review your entire application again. We’ll consider everything you’ve submitted, including updated grades, new test scores (if any), and other relevant information when applications are re-reviewed in the Spring term.
