Confirmation Deadline Extended

The University of Kentucky is extending its confirmation deadline to May 15 for first-time students who wish to enroll for the fall 2024 semester. This extension is due to federal delays associated with important financial aid information.

UK’s traditional confirmation deadline is May 1. However, to ensure as much flexibility and time as possible for families and students, the decision has been made to extend the deadline. Specifically, there have been significant delays during this enrollment cycle because of the availability and processing of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to both students and universities.

Because of these delays at the federal level, students are receiving their financial aid notifications much later than in previous years.

UK is still awaiting additional FAFSA data for processing. As a result, university officials anticipate sending financial aid notifications to students starting at the end of April.

Important to Note

  • Most first-year incoming students must confirm by Wednesday, May 15.  (This deadline does not apply to international students or transfer students.)
  • Once UK has prepared a student’s financial aid notification (FAN), the student will receive an email with their detailed electronic FAN.
  • Financial aid notifications will be sent in batches based on when the FAFSA was filed and when it was received by UK. As a result, not all notifications will be sent at the same time.
  • If students submitted a FAFSA by May 1 but receive financial aid notifications on or after the May 15 deadline extension, they will be given seven days from the date of their emailed packages to confirm their spots in the fall 2024 class.
  • Students who submit a FAFSA after May 1 will not be provided the additional seven days; they must confirm their plans by the May 15 deadline.
  • We will closely monitor other deadlines that may be impacted by this extension, including the housing application deadline, which remains June 1.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the new deadline for first-year incoming students to confirm their spot for the fall semester?

The extended date is May 15. Originally, it was May 1.

Why was the deadline extended?

This extension is due to federal delays associated with important financial aid information. Specifically, there have been significant delays during this enrollment cycle because of the availability and processing of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to both students and universities. Because of these delays at the federal level, UK has been significantly delayed in preparing financial aid notifications for its students.

When does UK expect to send financial aid notifications to students?

This year, we aim to begin processing and sending financial aid notifications to students by the end of April. Historically, UK has sent financial aid packages to students at the beginning of March

Is there a prioritization of how the financial aid notifications are being processed and sent out to students?

Financial aid notifications will be sent in batches based on when the student filed their FAFSA and when it was received by UK. As a result, not all notifications will be sent at the same time.

How will students be notified that their financial aid notifications are finalized for their review?

Once UK has prepared a student’s financial aid notification (FAN), the student will receive an email with their detailed electronic FAN

Is there a deadline to file for the FAFSA?

If a student has not yet filed a FAFSA, we urge them to do so as soon as possible. Include UK's school code - 001989 - on your FAFSA.

What if a student filed their FAFSA prior to May 1, but received their financial aid notification on or after the May 15?

If a student submitted a FAFSA by May 1 but receives their financial aid notification on or after the May 15 deadline extension, they will be given seven days from the date of their emailed packages to confirm their spot in the fall 2024 class by registering for BBN Orientation

Students who submit a FAFSA after May 1 must pay their orientation fee and enrollment prepayment by May 15; they will not be provided the additional seven days.

Will this May 15 confirmation deadline extension affect other deadlines, such as housing selection?

At this time, we do not anticipate changes to housing deadlines. Any changes will be communicated widely and directly to impacted students.
